On a mala, or set of mantra counting beads, there are generally 108 beads, or some fraction of that number.
The question often arises:
"Why are there 108 beads on a mala?"
Below are some of the many reasons that have been given, as well as a few other points of interest. None of these reasons are being promoted here as more or less true than the others. However, you may notice that 108 appears to be somewhat like a road map of reality in general, and the human in particular.
Regardless of the meaning of 108, it is important that if a mala is used to count mantras, the mantra be remembered with sincerity, devotion, feeling, and full attention.
9 times 12: Both of these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 is 108. Also, 1 plus 8 equals 9. That 9 times 12 equals 108.
Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in math: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2x2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108
Desires: There are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals.
Lies: There are said to be 108 lies that humans tell.
Delusions: There are said to be 108 human delusions or forms of ignorance.
Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.
Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.
Pranayama: If one is able to be so calm in meditation as to have only 108 breaths in a day, enlightenment will come.
Upanishads: Some say there are 108 Upanishads, texts of the wisdom of the ancient sages.
Sri Yantra: On the Sri Yantra there are marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersections has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti qualities. 54 times 2 equals 108. Thus, there are 108 points that define the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.
Pentagon: The angle formed by two adjacent lines in a pentagon equals 108 degrees.
Marmas: Marmas or marmastanas are like energy intersections called chakras, except have fewer energy lines converging to form them. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.
Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.
8 extra beads: In doing a practice of counting the number of repetitions of the mala, 100 are counted as completed. The remaining are said to cover errors or omissions. The 8 are also said to be an offering to God and Guru.
Chemistry: Interestingly, there are about 115 elements known on the periodic table of the elements. Most of those, around or higher than the number 100 only exist in the laboratory, and some for only thousandths of a second. The number that naturally exist on Earth is around 100.
Astrology: There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.
River Ganga: The sacred River Ganga spans a longitude of 12 degrees (79 to 91), and a latitude of 9 degrees (22 to 31). 12 times 9 equals 108.
Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.
Goddess names: There are said to be 108 Indian goddess names.
Gopis of Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maid servants of Krishna.
1, 0, and 8: Some say that 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.
Sun and Earth: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
Moon and Earth: The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
Silver and the moon: In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.
Numerical scale: The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, which is the number of the numerical scale, i.e. 1, 2, 3 ... 10, etc., where 0 is not a number.
Meditations: Some say there are 108 styles of meditation.
Breath: Tantra estimates the average number of breaths per day at 21,600, of which 10,800 are solar energy, and 10,800 are lunar energy. Multiplying 108 by 100 is 10,800. Multiplying 2 x 10,800 equals 21,600.
Paths to God: Some suggest that there are 108 paths to God.
Smaller divisions: The number 108 is divided, such as in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.
Hinduism: 108 is said to refer to the number of Hindu deities. Some say that each of the deities has 108 names.
Islam: The number 108 is used in Islam to refer to God.
Jain: In the Jain religion, 108 are the combined virtues of five categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.
Sikh: The Sikh tradition has a mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.
Buddhism: Some Buddhists carve 108 small Buddhas on a walnut for good luck. Some ring a bell 108 times to celebrate a new year.
Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each.
Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.
Meru: This is a larger bead, not part of the 108. It is not tied in the sequence of the other beads. It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.
Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.
Praiseworthy souls: There are 108 qualities of praiseworthy souls.

Just to fix a small mistake, the 9 divisions of the 12 signs are called 'navamsa'. Chandrakala (chandra- moon, and kala-time) is a name for the 16 phases of the Moon also called tithis. -

More than 12 constellations
Sun, March 6, 2005 - 2:38 AM:-) Interesting . . . Navamsa? Different dialect or a total misspelling in the first place?
As it happens there are more than 12 constellations.
Born Under Ophiuchus and Ignored by the Horoscopes:
A Modern Dilemma
John Mosley
Griffith Observatory
One tidbit of "astronomical" information that most people seem to know is their "sun sign." But few people know what it means. Fewer still know that it doesn't mean that at all, or at least that it hasn't for the past few thousand years.
If asked, most people would say that a "Gemini" is a person who was born when the sun was in front of the stars of the constellation Gemini the twins. That might have been true about 2,600 years ago, but it isn't today-for two reasons.
First, when the astrological sun sign system was set up more than two thousand years ago, the sun's path was divided into twelve equally spaced "signs," each 30 degrees wide, and these signs only approximately coincided with the constellations. Cancer, for example, is a small constellation, and Pisces is huge, but both are accorded onetwelfth of the sun's annual path. The constellation Cancer -- which is made of stars - never coincided exactly with the sign of Cancer -- which is a 30 degree wide zone along the sun's path. And each astronomer/astrologer had his own idea of where the constellation Cancer began and ended, and even of how many constellations there were.
Astronomers finally settled this nagging problem about 60 years ago when the international Astronomical Union said these are the official constellation boundaries, and published a set of specifications that reads like a surveyor's plot of irregular parcels of land. This, for example, is the true location of the constellation Cancer:
Trace along declination 7 °0' from right ascension 9h 15m to 7h 55m 30s
Then go north from declination 7 °0' to 10 °.
Turn west and continue on 10 °from right ascension 7h 55m 30s to 7h 48m 30s
Now head north again from 10 °to 20 °0'
Then double back east from right ascension 7h 48m 30s to 7h 53m
Again go north from 20 °0' to 28 °0'.
Along declination 28 °0', go east from right ascension 7h 53m to 8h 0m
Again cut north to 33 °O'.
Along declination 33 °O', 90 east from right ascension 8h 0m to 9h1 5m
Then close the boundary by turning south and continuing south on right ascension 9h 15m from declination 33 °O' to 7 °O'.
This redrawing of the boundaries added a constellation to the zodiac. According to the official modern constellation boundaries that all astronomers use, the sun passes through 13 constellations, not 12. The "thirteenth constellation" of the zodiac is Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer, and the sun is in front of its stars during the first half of December. About one person in twenty is an "Ophiuchus," but few of them know it.
Second, the dates that the sun spends in each constellation have shifted by a few weeks. Originally the sun was in front of the stars of Gemini during the first two weeks of May, for example. Now in 1988, the sun is in front of the stars of Taurus during the same two weeks. What happened?
The earth is wobbling as it spins. Because the moon and sun are constantly pulling on the earth's equatorial bulge, the earth wobbles like a top that is slowing down. This wobbling is called precession, and it's so slow that the earth takes 25,800 years to complete one wobble. The most familiar way to think of this motion is to visualize the earth's axis as sweeping out a huge circle in the sky that includes Polaris and a point near the star Vega (which will be the pole star in 12,000 years). Another way to think about it is to imagine that the position of the sun on the first day of spring (the vernal equinox) slowly drifts around the sky. Five thousand years ago the sun was in Taurus, near the Pleiades star cluster, on the first day of spring. By the time of Christ, the earth's wobbling had caused the sun to be on the boundary between Aries and Pisces on the same date. Six centuries from now the sun will be in Aquarius as spring begins (and the "Age of Aquarius," a longoverdue age of universal peace and brotherhood, will finally dawn).
Not only has the position of the sun on the first day of spring shifted over the past few thousand years; so has the position of the sun on every date. For example, the sun used to enter Cancer at the moment of the summer solstice (hence the term tropic of Cancer for the latitude where the sun is overhead on that date). This year [1988] the sun is in Gemini on the summer solstice. Next year is the last year that this is true. Beginning in 1990 the sun will be in Taurus at the summer solstice, two, constellations off of its "original" position.
When the earth's wobbling was discovered by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus in the second century B. C., astrologers had a problem. The sun was supposed to be in Aries as spring began, but it was really in front of the stars of Pisces. The astrologers took this bombshell in stride and declared that the signs drifted with the sun and that the sun was still in the sign of Aries, even though it was in front of the stars of Pisces. Hipparchus, by the way, is the northeastfacing astronomer on the Astronomers Monument on the Observatory's lawn.
So the constellations have stayed in the same direction, but the signs have drifted to the west (relative to the fixed stars), and they no longer coincide. If you were born during the first two weeks of May 2600 years ago, you were born when the sun was in both the sign and constellation of Taurus. Now during those weeks the sun is in Aries. Astrologically speaking, you are still a Taurus; astronomically speaking you are an Aries. Likewise, most Libras are really Virgos, and so on. (And to add insult to injury, most Sagittarians are really Ophiuchi.) Of the 366 possible birthdates, the sign astrologers use corresponds to the astronomical constellation 14 percent of the time. The astrological sign is off by one constellation for 84 percent and by two constellations for the other 2 percent.
So much for the effect that the stars have on our lives. The astrological effect that "Aries" is supposed to exert follows the drifting sun, not the stars. If astrology works, its mysterious forces come from arbitrary directions in space that have nothing to do with the stars that lie in those directions.
The table below lists the dates when the sun is in the real astronomical constellations of the zodiac. The dates fluctuate by a day from year to year.
Now, will an Ophiuchus please stand up!

Re: More than 12 constellations
Sun, March 6, 2005 - 11:00 AMnava- nine, and amsa- division, so it becomes navamsa, it was just a spelling mistake but the Chandrakala comment was incorrect.
12 verses 13 signs. Depends on how one decides to calculate the signs, the stellar signs were never 30 degrees, and the ancients never thought the actual stars were 30 degrees. If we use the actual constellations it becomes a stellar astrology that does not even require signs and Indian stellar astrology has 28 official constellations besides the 12 sun signs. For example, there is a cluster in Taurus said to be a bullock cart, and there are different interpretations of when the planet is behind the cart, in the cart or in front of the cart, the interpretation is stellar and not relative to signs.
The 12 signs of 30 degrees are created by mathematics of natural phenomena. It takes 360 degrees to go around the zodiac, this 360 is an approximation of the Sun moving 1 degree a day, which is known as the sexadecimal system, used by the Sumerians and Babylonians and still used today in the 12 hours of the clock, 24 hours of the day, 60 minutes in an hour, etc. There are approximately 12 lunar months in a solar year, so the Sun moves approximately 30 degrees in a lunar month. This was the first foundation of the 12 signs. The lunar-soli calendar reconciled the Sun with the Moon every three years with an intercalary lunar month, in India, which still uses this system, it was just celebrated this past fall (2004).
Now the procession is making the tropical (western) signs not correlate to the actual star constellations (sidereal zodiac). Most people think that Vedic astrology uses only the sidereal zodiac while western astrology uses the tropical zodiac but Vedic astrology uses both. The tropical zodiac that does not relate to the stars is called the Visnu Chakra which relates to the cardinal directions and the seasons. It is used to predict the seasons and the weather. The Sidereal Zodiac relating to the stars is called the Narayana chakra and is used for human, animal and human creations birth charts. The difference between the two is called the ayanamsa. And has been calculated for thousands of years. The difference between the two shows the astrological age we are presently in.
The cause for the procession is often attributed to the wobble of the earth, which is the most accepted theory. But there are other theories that the Sun itself is actually moving around a cosmic Sun and that this is the cause of the procession. More hard info on this theory can be found at www.binaryresearchinstitute.org/in.....shtml

Re: More than 12 constellations
Sun, March 6, 2005 - 4:49 PMYou know the 12 signs are a human delusion and have no connection with natural cycles... THE MOON GOES ROUND THE EARTH 13 TIMES PER YEAR...
The 360-degree cycle is a measure of SPACE NOT TIME...
& THE GREOGORIAN CALENDAR IS AN INSTITUTION OF WAR
WHO ARE YOUR GODS? WHO DO YOU WORKSHIP IN TIME?
"The 12 signs of 30 degrees are created by mathematics of natural phenomena." .... this 360 is an approximation of the Sun moving 1 degree a day, which is known as the sexadecimal system, used by the Sumerians and Babylonians and still used today in the 12 hours of the clock, 24 hours of the day, 60 minutes in an hour, etc. There are approximately 12 lunar months in a solar year, so the Sun moves approximately 30 degrees in a lunar month. This was the first foundation of the 12 signs."
Don't want to shatter your illusion but,
The 12:60 is intrinsically dysyncrhonous and dualizing... If there was ever any dualistic distinction made that became so institutionalized as to become second nature, it is the 12:60 timing frequency, reinforced altogether by the twelve-month Gregorian calendar and twelve-part division of the mechanical - now digital and atomic - clock. The entire apparatus of mechanical time and industrial monetary civilization is embedded in the human brain, held together and inseparable from the irregular measure of the calendar and the inhuman and mechanistic ceaselessness of the clock. The mechanization of time paced by the irregular calendar has embedded in the brain a host of seemingly irreplaceable concepts, such as taxation and government, and irreversible tendencies, technology and globalization, that drive the human, and all of life toward its all-consuming apocalyptic conclusion."

Re: More than 12 constellations
Sun, March 6, 2005 - 6:02 PMI really enjoy the mayan calendar but I try not to be a fundamentalist, there are many calendars that have existed throughout time and everything in creation has its purpose. I myself enjoy a little star gazing and I like a calendar that I can calculate myself by paying attention to the sky, a lunar/solar calendar allows me to do that. I myself can’t do that with the mayan calendar.
The true lunar month is measured precisely to be 29.53-days. The synodic cycle is the one used most often to calculate time as it is a new Moon to a new Moon, easily observable to the human eye. If you wanted to calculate the sidereal month you could start at a star and when the Moon returned to that star it would be 27.321582 days (x 13 = 355.180566). The number 28 is an approximation, so either calendar, you are either approximating the solar year or the lunar month, there is no way to get around it. That has been why there have been hundreds of different calendars throughout history.
In the common non-gregorian lunar/solar calendar that I like to use “it is common to speak of a lunar year of twelve synodic months, or 354.36707 days”. ( astro.nmsu.edu/~lhuber/leaphist.html )
That leaves 11 days left over. After 3 lunar years this extra time becomes the intercalary month that synchronizes the Sun and Moon Calendars. ( astro.nmsu.edu/~lhuber/leaphist.html )
The 12 month calendar predates the disastrous Gregorian calendar (1582) of the church by thousands of years. Many ancient civilizations used it. 12 is a very sacred number and it becomes 108 when multiplied by 9. The 360 degree circle is a space-time approximation, just like the 28 days of the mayan calendar. Natural phenomena does not fall into perfect numbers and humans only can approximate it. In the mayan calendar there is a day out of time every year, in the type of luni-solar calendar I like to use there is a month out of time every three years, hurray for both.
Many blessings. -

Re: 13 embraces 12 ~ 12 becomes 13
Mon, March 7, 2005 - 12:26 AMall are excellent view points
any model is secondary, and temporary, in relation to the wholeness of experience
the AllThatIs, recognizes the true intention in our various rituals, almost regardless of outer garment
there is one crucial importance with the maya calendar, and that is the (re)alignment of spacetime
that said, one can use Transpersonal Astrology for that same purpose
the benefit of Transpersonal Astrology is being aligned with the archons ( not opposing anything archetypal )
so
365.2422/12=30.43685...
365.2422/30=12.17474...
those three little dots are the most important in the whole equation
there will always be residue, and cycles within cycles, inbetween the outbreath and inbreath of any kalpa
the astrological houses are a good enough field to align one's personal relational spiritual experience
one failing of the Piscean aeon, is to search for the perfect, ideal correlations, one fish presenting the perfect ordered system, the other fish lost in the chaordic wonders of experience, with a very taut umbilical inbetween
the ideal correlations between the ideal and the experienced, doesnt exist,
we are always dreaming a better world into existence, or wandering as if lost in illusions, eventually, we realize these are the same dreams
the realization of this, is usually experienced as entering a period of profound existential depression, something I've called the chrysalis stage of human experience, and many people before me has described as the symbolical alchemy of soul
it is both indicative of the spirit getting close enough to becoming embodied in a human body, and also, for the human body to begin to experience its first cosmic stirrings
if people living within this particular Gregorian en-actment/en-chantment would allow a glimpse of this stirring, as per offered now around the globe, and if those living in the more Aquarian, more updated frequencies would be conversant with the old rites, much flesh would be saved

354.367...
Mon, March 7, 2005 - 2:15 AMThere is a way to resolve the 12 - 13 conundrum.
Through 11:11.
The twelve synodic months year, is a way to honour the Moon, the Mind, the personality, the Yin, and honouring the immersion in the sensual universe that is her realm.
The insertion of eleven days, is a way to align with the SoliGaian year of 365.2425 days.
This can be done through observing how the inner seasons of the Moon, are waxing and waning in relation with the external gregorian overlay. This praxis would possibly suit those that have chosen to live in a commune.
Or, it can be done through actually inserting eleven days evenly spaced in time throughout the year, and notice how the obligations of the external world sometimes succeeds in making us become as if out of kilter with our inner sense of wholeness of mind. Thus these eleven days could be used as realignment with the embodied divine, with Goddess, in the midst of the busy ordinary life of our choosing.
